Building the House

Our Roots Run Deep… or they will eventually

David and I are building our very first new construction home. We got married about 2.5 years ago after meeting in Paris and getting married in Hawaii (insert: “Thank you, David, for being from there!!!!!!”).

We don’t shy away from adventure- or do anything halfway. So when it came to deciding where we should live we decided that doing something all our own was exactly what the next step should be.

We decided to put our roots down in a little Midwestern town where I spent my childhood. When we were looking for the place we wanted to call home we knew we wanted something convenient (just like everyone else, right?) but we also wanted something close to nature. A place we could garden and foster a sense of wonder. A place that would feel like an escape from the rest of the world.

We found it. It was hidden right outside of town- you would never guess it was there. Nine acres of forest with a small river carving a line right down the back boundary of the property. The trees reach so high that some of their branches are hard to see. The stream can be seen when you peer down a rocky gorge worn down over time by the little river. It’s not far from the bustling world out there, but when I hear the water rushing over the rocks below I feel like I’m on vacation, miles and miles away. The moment we saw it, David and I wanted to grow roots right next to the forest trees and never leave. It was our home. Or, at least, we hope it will be our home very soon!

Let’s just say that the process of buying land, designing a custom home and figuring out how to get that home built on a newly wed budget has been…. a learning experience!

We’ve wished that there was someone out there to tell us what to watch out for, what not to do and what we absolutely SHOULD do. In other words it would have been really nice to know what to expect. Well, since we didn’t have any one to do that for us we hope that our “adventure” will become a resource for others. A step by step guide of how the building process works from beginning to end.

So, what is there to look forward to from us? We’ll walk you through what we’ve learned on subjects like purchasing land to build on, designing a custom home, defining your “couples” design style, making design choices you won’t regret, clearing land, forest conservation, homesteading and whatever else we find out along the way… that no one told us about!

Again, we hope this is helpful.. but even if you don’t need to know anything about building a home, we hope you can enjoy this journey along with us! After all, since we don’t really know what to expect, there are bound to be hilarious surprises along the way!

Stay tuned because, next post we will reveal photos of our land and share what we learned as we purchased the property.

  2. Hmm is anyone else experiencing problems with the pictures on this blog loading?
I’m trying to determine if its a problem on my
end or if it’s the blog. Any responses would be greatly appreciated.

    1. Thank you so much for your feedback. I hope the issue has now resolved for you. This may have been occurring because we were in the middle of transitioning hosts. Please let us know if you continue to have this issue and we hope to see you back soon!
